We have been keeping store photo albums since we started in business almost 35 years ago, documenting every window display and all major staff events. This gives us a treasure trove of display ideas, as well as a starting point for discussing what has worked best in our windows over the years.

These albums also serve as collections of “family” pictures for our past and present employees.  During the anniversary celebrations and staff reunions we hold every five years a crowd always forms around the table where they are displayed as everyone tries to find “their years” at the store.

Digital photography has also made it possible to easily photograph merchandise and displays for posting on the store’s web site, although we don’t do as much of this as we should. Our web site is undergoing a revamp right now that we hope will make it easier for us to keep our photos up to date.  (Some of the historic shots are online now, if you’re curious to see what retailing looked like in the 1970s!)

Another use of digital photography is the reporting of defective claims, as you can see in the above picture of defective cutting boards.  It is an efficient way to justify a disputed claim, and much less expensive than shipping the merchandise back if there is some doubt as to whether you’ll be reimbursed for the shipping cost.

Digital cameras have come down in price to the point that it may be worth buying one just to keep at the store, together with a cord or card reader that allows you to upload photos right away.  Once you have a camera on hand you will undoubtedly find creative ways to use pictures in your store signage, your e-mail newsletter, on your web site, and yes, even in your weekly blog!

Happy Retailing,
