October 8, 2012 Your shop undoubtedly sells lots of different items, because a wide variety increases your chance of having something that each customer will want. But every so often it can be fun to pick one product — preferable a new discovery for your store — and to really do all you can to promote it. The key to focusing on a single product is to have a lot of stock on hand, and to create a display that says “look at this!”. If you have a table or pedestal near your entryway, that would be an ideal spot for making a dramatic first impression on customers. The fact that you have a lot of the item on hand already says that you believe strongly in its appeal. Signage in the display will help draw attention to the features you want customers to notice. Consider hanging a few of the items from the ceiling, or having a stack of them already boxed and gift-wrapped. Give each of your staff members one (or offer a deep discount) to get them excited about the product. You might even offer an incentive such as movie tickets or free pizza if they meet the goal of selling a certain number each day. In addition to providing a display of your top pick in the store, you’ll want to post something about its arrival on your Facebook page and Pinterest board. When you next send out a customer e-mail, promote your new favorite product there as well. The vendor for your selected item may be willing to help you with this effort, so be sure to ask if there are videos, photos or samples of the product that you can use. Because of course the more you sell, the more your store — and your supplier — will benefit. Happy Retailing, Carol “Orange” Schroeder
